A year of lockdown has made me wonder how we have been shaped by the pandemic. The lack of contact has affected each one of us in many different ways. A number of interesting articles have been written on mainstream sites as well as higher brow publications such as the Economist about the lack of touch and how much we need touch. I can’t help but feel that the year without direct contact and for many, without touch, may have led to some of us feeling closed off, isolated and disconnected from the world and from ourselves. The phrase ‘I am because you are’ an african phrase and it also brings to mind Heidegger’s two words of ‘dasein’ and ‘mitsein’ which a german friend once brought up in conversation. So having to close ourselves off from others, how will we be when all the restrictions are ‘lifted’? How will we go about reopening ourselves to ourselves and others again?
